Hundreds of people gathered on Monday morning at the
Apostolic Church of God on Chicago’s
South Side for a private funeral service in honor of Jennifer Hudson’s murdered
mother, brother and nephew.
A self-possessed Jennifer Hudson stopped in front of the
caskets carrying the bodies of her relatives and kissed her mother goodbye. The
invitation-only ceremony was attended by family members and celebrity friends,
including Oprah Winfrey, Usher, Queen Latifah, Patti LaBelle, Missy Elliott,
Clive Davis, Ciara and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Jennifer Hudson’s former “American Idol” opponent, Fantasia,
who also won the talent show, performed the gospel song “Your Grace and Mercy,”
while Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and the Rev. Jesse Jackson were among the
people who spoke during the three-hour funeral.
The Academy Award-winning actress’ mother, Darnell Hudson
Donerson, 57, her brother, Jason Hudson, 29, and her 7-year-old nephew, Julian
King, have been the victims of horrific killings. The adults were found dead on
October 24 at their home, while the body of the boy, who was the son of
Jennifer Hudson’s sister, Julia, was discovered three days later in an
abandoned SUV.
After the funeral, a horse-drawn carriage led the convoy to
the Oak Woods
Cemetery, where the Hudson family members were buried.
William Balfour, Julia Hudson’s 27-year-old estranged
husband and Julian King’s stepfather, has been in police custody since the
first two bodies were found. He was arrested for parole violation, after
spending several years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and
possessing a stolen vehicle and has also been named a “person of interest” in
the Hudson
case.
