Jennifer Garner has been granted a permanent restraining
order against a man she says has been stalking her for years.
Jennifer Garner obtained a temporary restraining order
earlier this month against 36-year-old Steven R. Burky, a man she claims in
court documents has been stalking and harassing her ever since 2002. The actress
detailed in the documents how Burky turned up at her house several times saying
he had had visions of her death sent to him by God. She claims he followed her
across the country, to various locations and sent packages to her as well as
letters, containing “delusional and paranoid thoughts.”
Garner filed papers in Los Angeles Superior Court, asking
for the temporary restraining order issued against Burky to be made permanent.
Thursday morning, Garner and her family obtained three years of protection,
reports Reuters.
Garner stated in court documents that she feared for her
safety and that of husband Ben Affleck and daughter Violet Affleck. She added
that being pregnant, she now fears for her second child as well. She described
his behavior as “obsessive, threatening and stalking.”
The temporary restraining order was issued on Nov. 7 and
required that the man stay at least 100 yards away from the star and not
contact Garner, her husband or her child. The judge deemed there was a
“credible threat of violence” upon issuing the restraining order.
Dennis Bridwell of Galabad Protective Services, who was
hired by Garner, said his concern for the safety of Garner and her family
increased when he saw Burky’s online blogs, in which he claimed to have been
sexually abused as a child and to have participated in satanic rituals. Burky
also claimed he wished to participate in the murder of a “young, Christian”
woman.
Jennifer Garner, 33, and Ben Affleck, 36, married in June
2005 and welcomed daughter Violet in December of that year. She is pregnant
with her second baby, who is due before the year is over.
Other celebrities to have suffered over the excessive
attention of a fan turned stalker include Uma Thurman, Paula Abdul, Hilary
Duff, and John Cusack, among others.
