Actress Jennifer Garner obtained a restraining order against a very unusual fan, who obsessively tried to contact her for years, eventually becoming big enough of a threat to the star and her growing family that she asked for legal protection.
Aside from all the paparazzi constantly trailing her, Garner had to deal with a man called Steven Burky, who had been following her around the country and trying to contact her since 2002. Over recent months however, the man got a little too close for comfort to the pregnant star and her family and crazier by the day, Lancasteronline.com reported.
"Mr. Burky has been stalking and harassing me," sending "packages and letters containing delusional and paranoid thoughts and following me around the country," Jennifer Garner wrote in the papers filed by an attorney who appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom Thursday morning winning three years of protection for Garner, husband Ben Affleck and their daughter, Violet.
The 36-year-old fan, who is quite passionate with human sacrifices as it results from his Satanic Panic blog, is currently being held in a mental hospital due to "his obsessive and harassing behavior" which has escalated to the point of becoming "dangerous and threatening."
According to the court documents, Burky, dressed in what was described as a religious-type garment, showed up at Garner's home, rang the gate intercom and told the nanny he needed to deliver a message in person to the actress.
"He has now shown up at my private residence and has repeatedly expressed his belief that God has sent him a vision of me being 'persecuted' in some manner that might result in my death."
Over the years, Burky, who apparently lived in Lancaster from 1998 to 2000, traveled to Ohio, California, New York and Boston to see her at times, the documents state. He tried to approach her numerous times to confess his love wearing various disguises, mailing her pictures of himself and calling her.
"I am currently pregnant and fear for the safety of my second child once born," Garner wrote in the court order. Earlier this year, Burky sent her a long letter filled with religious references and Bible verses, saying he had a prophetic vision of Garner surrounded by a mob in public and did not know "whether death was the outcome."
As proof, the actress presented the court with a ream of notes and birthday cards from her stalker. In the letters, Burky apologized for being out of touch, informed her he sent her a birthday wish "for every year we've spent apart" and professed his undying love for the actress.
A judge issued a court order imposing Burky to stay at least 100 yards away from the former "Alias" star's family and staff, and mandated he sell any firearms he may have within 24 hours.
