Tokyo - A Japanese woman arriving from the United States Thursday tested negative for a new type of influenza, while a 17-year-old boy who returned from Canada awaits a result after testing positive for influenza type-A the previous day, the government said Friday.
The 25-year-old woman tested negative for the new influenza A(H1N1) strain, also known as swine flu, early Friday after she was taken to a hospital near Narita International Airport upon arrival from Los Angeles the day before.
Meanwhile, the teenager tested positive to a type-A flu examination when he started showing signs of influenza such as cough, phlegm and high fever a few days after he returned from a school excursion in British Columbia, Canada.
On the trip, he was accompanied by 114 schoolmates and five teachers, but none has developed any symptoms.
Their school in central Yokohama city was suspended until Wednesday, while other schools in the same region were advised to cancel classes.
Japan has no confirmed swine flu cases so far.
Meanwhile, the government decided to extend support to Mexico in fighting the spread of swine flu.
Japan will provide thousands of face-masks, goggles, disposable gloves and antiseptic mouthwash worth 100 million yen (1 million dollars) as well as about 20 cameras for thermographic inspections, Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura said.
