“Samurai Girl” comes as an oasis in the midst of a rather
dull season premiere filled with gorgeous looking rich teens and their
superficial problems. Defying “Gossip Girl” and “90210”-like dramas, the
three-part series debuting tonight on ABC Family might actually lure a broader
age segment than under-17 kids.
Based on the young-adult books by Carrie Asai, the plot
focuses on Heaven Kogo, the 19-year-old adopted daughter of a well-heeled
Japanese family. However, her life is not at all pink, as she is forced into a
marriage that would unite two wealthy and powerful families.
Prepared to tie
the knot, Heaven’s wedding is nonetheless interrupted by blasts (that are far
from being fireworks) and several ninjas, who kill her brother. Heaven (Jamie
Chung) flees with her faithful chauffeur just to end up in the hands of some
American friends and strangers, who provide her with love and martial arts
training, after telling her that her adoptive father is a yakuza tribal chief and
that she, as said by an ancient prophecy, is predestined to be a ninja avenger.
The last part of the divination, however, says that the female warrior will be
killed in a fierce battle. Will she make it? Predictable or not, it’s up to you
to find the answer.
Is this another series that promotes girl power? Another
women-can-be-ferocious-too show? It’s hard to tell the exact purpose of the
six-hour “Samurai Girl,” but it’s a cute mini-series, with an even cuter and
lovable star. It’s definitely a show for the entire family.
