On Friday James Spears and his lawyer, Andrew Wallet, were
named conservators of the Britney Spears estate after a court hearing held in the
Los Angeles
courthouse.
The decision follows after earlier this week, for the second
time in just one month, the pop singer Britney Spears has been rushed to a Los Angeles hospital
where her family and new psychiatrist have put her on a psychiatric hold for 72
hours.
Britney Spears was transported to the UCLA Medical Center in
an ambulance escorted by an impressive police team of 11 police motorcycles,
two squad cars and two police helicopters, The Los Angeles police claims the
security measures were required in order to protect Britney and for public
safety.
"This was a public safety concern, and they did what was
needed to get her transported," said officer Anna Aguirre.
Britney Spears was admitted to the Neuro-Psychiatric Unit
and she is scheduled to be released on Saturday, if nothing happens.
James Spears appeared in court with Britney’s mother and his
formers wife, Lynne Spears. James Spears, a building contractor, divorced Lynne
in May 2002.
According to a public statement from Commissioner Reva Goetz,
James Spears will be the conservator of her daughter until Monday, when a new
hearing is scheduled.
"It is in the best interests of the conservatee to have
conservatorship over her person," Goetz told a packed courtroom.
According to the US legislation, the conservatorship
is granted by a court when a person is deemed unable to look after himself or
herself or manage their own affairs.
As conservator, James Spears has control over Britney Spears’
liquid assets, including her home and her credit cards. James Spears has also
the right to change the locks on her estate and remove anyone who was there. He
has the power to hire around-the-clock security for Spears and to decide who is
visiting her at the he UCLA medical center.
However, James Spears does not have the right to interfere
with the medical treatment prescribed for his daughter or to force her to take
a certain medication.
The Los Angeles
courthouse has also issued a restraining order against Sam Lufti, Britney
Spears' sometimes manager and friend.
Few days ago, Sam Lufti reportedly called Barbara Walters
and told her the singer was seeking professional help.
During Monday morning’s episode of "The View,"
Walters told the audience that "There is a man named Sam Lutfi, who is the
manager and very good friend of Britney. He has been staying with her
constantly. He got in touch with us, I can't vouch for this. He seemed to be
very knowledgeable and he certainly was very nice. He said Britney was
suffering from what he describes as mental issues which are treatable. He said
that she has been to a psychiatrist and I assume she is starting some kind of
treatment. She has been having mood swings. She has been having some kind of
trouble sleeping."
Sam Lufti, Britney’s mother, her psychiatrist, her boyfriend
Adnan Ghalib and her assistant Alli Sims were all at the house on Thursday when
Britney was escorted away. But, according to the media reports, Sam Lufti and
Spears’ parents disagree on how Britney should be taking care of.
The celebrity site TMZ.com reported that Britney Spears was
anger when she learned the news about her father. "Nobody's taking my
house. Who is my family?" she screamed into a phone at one point, TMZ.com
claims.
For Britney Speas this is the second admission to a hospital
in less than one month. On January 3 Britney Spears was taken by ambulance to
the Cedars Sinai
Medical Center
following a three-hour standoff with police at her luxury Hollywood home. According to reports, she
locked herself and her year-old son Jayden in a bedroom rather than turn them
over to her ex-husband's bodyguard as she was supposed to.
The pop diva was reportedly hospitalized under a "5150
Hold," order under which a person is considered a danger to themselves or
others as a result of mental disorder.
This incident lead to a swirl of rumors that the singer is
suffering from a bipolar disorder, but nothing is confirmed. However, Britney
Spears was released two days later.
She has since lost all visitation rights with her two boys
and is only permitted to speak to them over the phone.
Also, shortly after the first hospitalization, the law firm
representing Spears in the custody battle had quit, saying the pop star was
"impossible" to work with. The legal resignation came after Spears
missed another court-ordered deposition with Federline's lawyer, Mark Vincent
Kaplan, to undergo cross-examination about her parenting abilities.
During 2007, Brtiney Spears repeatedly failed to show up for
court appearances, attacked her ex-husband's car and a posse of paparazzi with
an umbrella, and was unable to comply with court-ordered drug testing. Efforts
to revive her career backfired when she appeared overweight and disoriented at
a much-hyped appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards.
