A fire that broke out around 3 a.m. today managed to destroy
the historic James Hook & Co. Lobster Company, which had been conducting a
successful business for the past eight decades.
Several emergency fire crews were sent immediately at the
scene but due to its wooden structure, the 130 firefighters needed more than 3
hours to completely put the fire out. At a certain point, the firefighters were
called out of the building out of fear that it would collapse.
There were reported no victims and an investigation is
expected to identify what started the fire. Divers verified the integrity of
the building’s pilings in order to make sure that the pier was safe and the
traffic between the nearby Boston Harbor Hotel and South Station was also closed,
in addition to the Purchase Street exit (23) from Interstate 93 southbound.
According to a spokesman for the Fire Department, the
damages add up to over $5 million, which include the alteration of close to
60,000 pounds of lobster.
The company began its activity back in 1925, when the Hook
brothers began selling lobster to Boston’s top restaurants. According to the
company’s estimates, up until the incident, 50,000 pounds of lobster were
shipped out every day.
"When you've been coming to the same place for 30 years
and opening up every morning and suddenly you can't service your customers
anymore, it's a strange feeling," said one of the owners, Ed Hook, according
to Boston.com.
