Christie’s auction house sold the belongings of James Brown
for $800,000.
Fans of the Godfather of Soul were happy to bid for hundreds
of relics belonging to the late singer, including his iconic jumpsuits and capes,
his instruments, awards, cans of hairspray and hair curlers, BBC reports.
The most expensive item auctioned was a black cape with the
singer’s name written on the back, which went for $47,000.
The medical bracelet Brown was wearing before he died on Christmas
Day in 2006 was sold for the amazing price of $32,500. It was bought by
"Late Show with David Letterman" band leader Paul Shaffer, who paid
more than 100 times its presale estimate. The bracelet informed that the soul
singer was a diabetic and was allergic to penicillin.
Among the most expensive items were a red leather furniture
set that went for the price of $40,000 and a denim jumpsuit studded with the
acronym GFOS that was sold for $25,000.
Christie's auction house pop culture expert, Simeon Lipman,
who called the collection “wonderful,” said this was “a great opportunity for
collectors around the word to obtain a piece of the man, the myth and the
legend, Mr James Brown.”
James Brown died of heart failure at age 73, and his estate
was the center of attention since then. Even though Brown’s former managers
tried to block the auction, a judge approved it. The money raised from the sale
will be used pay taxes that his estate owes.
One of Brown’s daughters, Deanna Brown, said she was unhappy
with the auction, as she and her siblings had requested to go through the list
of belongings and “check off things that we didn’t think should go,” but they
were ignored and “at the end of the day, everything went.” Brown’s children
said they thought some of the items were too personal to be sold.
