Jailed Rapper T. I. Requests Pre-Trial Release

Clifford T. I. Harris, currently in custody for illegal possession of weapons, requested release on a $2.2 million bond and to be allowed to have monitored home confinement while he awaits trial.

T. I., real name Clifford Harris, was arrested a week ago, Saturday, Oct. 13, on charges of illegal possession of unregistered machine guns and silencers, as well as possession of firearms by a convicted felon. He has remained in police custody since then. He was formally charged on Wednesday by a federal grand jury, Reuters reports.

The rapper’s lawyers requested his release on a $2.2 million (£1 million) bond Friday, allowing him to be monitored around the clock and confined at home before his weapons charges trial. He would also be electronically tagged.

According to BBC News, lawyer Ed Garland proposed placing someone in T. I.’s home 24 hours a day to monitor activities. The 27-year-old rapper would only be able to receive visits from a pre-approved list.

US magistrate Judge Alan Baverman said he would reserve ruling on the request until October 26, when lawyers must produce a court-approved home monitor. If the request is approved, T. I. would also have to turn in his passport and his right to drive. Additionally, he would have to submit to random searches of his home and random drug screening.

T. I. was arrested a week ago in Atlanta by agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), as he arrived to receive unregistered machine guns and silencers his bodyguard had previously acquired for him.

It is illegal for convicted felons to have someone else purchase firearms on their behalf. T. I. had allegedly given his bodyguard $12,000 for that exact purpose. The man attempted to purchase the firearms from an undercover ATF agent without registering them. He was arrested and agreed to cooperate with agents and lead them to T. I.

At the time of the arrest, David E. Nahmias, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, said in a statement: “This convicted felon allegedly was trying to add several machine guns to an already large and entirely illegal arsenal of guns. Thanks to the good and quick work of ATF, he is now in custody and his firearms have been seized.”

T. I. has a history of illegal activity and was convicted of a violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act in 1998 and given seven years probation, the Department of Justice said.

He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 (£122,000) fine for each count.

Friday, prosecutors argued that T. I. poses a flight risk and danger to the community due to his criminal history and because he was arrested while allegedly trying to buy machine
