Will Smith will produce a remake of "The Karate Kid” that will feature his son, Jaden Smith. The 10 year old Jaden also starred with his dad in “The Pursuit of Happyness” and he’s also in the new sci-fi remake of “The Day the Earth Stood Still.”
Columbia Pictures is waxing on for a remake of the 1984 classic, according to Variety, and the film “will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.” Chris Murphy, the scribe of the original franchise, is writing the new take, which will film in Beijing and other cities next year. Moreover back in 1994 the franchise's third installment was released, with Hillary Swank taking over the titular role in "The Next Karate Kid."
According to Daily Variety, the film is based on a man who is kidnapped and jailed for 15 years without explanation. After his sudden and unexpected release, the man set on a path to find those responsible for his imprisonment and take revenge. Jaden will play a bullied son who befriends an eccentric mentor and learns to protect himself.
Opinions regarding this initiative are rather skeptical. Critics are of the opinion that a remake of the 1984 bomb is likely to be a disaster.
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s son, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith was born July 8th, 1998. The actor has another child, Willard Smith III a.k.a. Trey Smith, born in December 1992, with Sheree Smith.
