Tom Clancy’s fictional character Jack Ryan could be revived by Sam Raimi and Paramount Pictures for a brand new series of films, Variety reports.
Sam Raimi, director of the overwhelmingly successful “Spider Man” films, has set his eyes on another potential golden goose: a franchise revival of Jack Ryan.
Raimi is in negotiations with Paramount; should an agreement be reached, Raimi would develop and direct the films to be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Raimi's Buckaroo Entertainment partner Josh Donen, according to the trade paper.
Paramount controls rights to the Jack Ryan character and has exclusive access to Tom Clancy’s upcoming new novel. While Clancy is currently working on a Ryan novel, it remains to be seen whether the studio decides to use that story.
Raimi will first complete Universal horror film “Drag Me to Hell.” While he is busy doing this, Paramount will find a screenwriter to write the first Ryan movie to be directed by Raimi, with an intended release in the summer of 2010.
The films would reportedly focus on Ryan’s earlier days, at a “more formative point in his career than previously depicted,” per the trade paper. The studio could also choose to set the film in the present, with the a global threat as the story’s impetus.
The CIA analyst character has been portrayed by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck over the course of four films from 1990 to 2002: “The Hunt for Red October” (1990); “Patriot Games” (1992); “Clear and Present Danger” (1994); and “The Sum of All Fears” (2002), respectively.
The four films, spearheaded by producer Mace Neufeld, grossed $781.5 million worldwide.
Sam Raimi famously directed the “Spider Man” trilogy, which still has room to expand. His other directing projects include 1981’s classic horror film “The Evil Dead,” 1998’s critically acclaimed crime thriller “A Simple Plan” and 2000’s “The Gift.”
Supernatural thriller “Drag Me to Hell,” which Raimi is directing for Ghost House Pictures, stars Justin Long and Alison Lohman. The script was penned by Raimi and his brother Ivan. Shooting is set to start March 31 in Los Angeles. Universal is distributing.
