Hawaiian singer-songwriter Jack Johnson topped the Billboard 200 for a second consecutive week, with his fifth studio album “Sleep through the Static” exceeding the half-million figure in total sales so far.
Jack Johnson’s Brushfire effort sold another 180,000 copies in the US according to Nielsen SoundScan figures, in addition to last week’s record-breaking sales of 374,600 units, the biggest first week sales of 2008.
“Sleep through the Static” sold approximately half the number of albums it sold last week but considering that the singer will embark on a world tour in March and that he also headlines the Bonnaroo Music Festival on Sunday, June 15th, we can expect “Sleep” to continue to perform well.
This week’s surprise comes from Amy Winehouse, the undeniable queen of the Grammys on Feb. 10, when she scooped five of the six awards she had been nominated for, including record of the year, song of the year and best new artist. “Back to Black” reentered the top 10, climbing from a modest 24 to a high 2, with 115,000 copies sold.
Alicia Keys is a proud veteran on the Billboard chart, with her “As I Am” album, released in November and frequent yoyo-er on the top positions, maintaining its No. 3 place with 109,000 albums.
The 2008 Grammy Nominees compilation sold another 72,000 at No. 4, one place higher than last week.
Another Grammy winner, Herbie Hancock, who was awarded with the album of the year trophy for his Joni Mitchell tribute, “River: The Joni Letters,” jumped from chart position 159 to 5, Billboard.com reports, with 54,000 sold units.
At No. 6 is another album benefiting from awards buzz, this time the soundtrack to the Academy Award-nominated “Juno,” which sold an additional 53,000. Taylor Swift's self-titled album climbed to No. 7 with 52,000, while last week’s debut at No. 2, Sheryl Crow’s “Detours,” slipped to No. 8.
Mary J. Blige’s “Growing Pains” sold 49,000 units at No. 9 while Atlantic’s soundtrack to the film “Step Up 2” rounds up the top 10, with 45,000 units. The urban dance sequel to the 2006 movie “Step Up” was released on Valentine’s Day.
Other Grammy fortunate ones who experienced raised sales were the Foo Fighters, with “Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace” zooming from 65 to 22 with 33,000 while Kanye West’s “Graduation” climbed 14 spots to No. 40, selling 23,000.
Billboard also notes that Michael Jackson’s 25th anniversary edition of the history-making “Thriller” album sold 166,000 during its first week, placing No. 1 on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. The project includes revamped “Thriller” tracks by Akon, Kanye West, Fergie and will.i.am.
