It’s a Healthy Baby Girl for…“Pregnant Man” Thomas Beatie!

Thomas Beatie is the lucky father of a baby girl whom he carried in his womb for nine months. How is that possible? Well years ago, Beatie was a normal woman, but decided to become a man. Therefore, Beatie underwent surgery to reconstruct his chest and had testosterone therapy. However, he kept his female reproductive organs, thus becoming pregnant through artificial insemination. His wife, Nancy, went through a hysterectomy due to severe endometriosis 20 years ago and was unable to carry a baby.

Therefore, Beatie decided to carry their child, thus becoming the first pregnant man ever and, now, the first man giving birth to a baby girl, ABC News reported.

The 34-year-old transgendered man revealed his impregnated womb in March this year, the news making headlines all over the world. Some have doubted that was real, some others condemned Beatie and his wife’s decision to have their baby this way. Being invited on Oprah Winfrey’ show to talk about his pregnancy, Beatie said “it’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human need. I’m a person and I have the right to have a biological child.”

In an article written by himself in the leading US gay magazine The Advocate, entitled “Labor of Love,” Beatie said the pregnancy was not “unusual” to him, his wife, and his neighbors. It was just the right thing they had to do given the fact that Nancy wasn’t able to carry a baby.

He further described how he stopped taking his bimonthly testosterone injections the moment they decided to become parents. “It had been roughly eight years since I had my last menstrual cycle, so this wasn’t a decision that I took lightly. My body regulated itself after about four months, and I didn’t have to take any exogenous estrogen, progesterone, or fertility drugs to aid my pregnancy,” Beatie wrote.

However, what seemed right for them “sparked legal, political, and social unknowns,” he further said with many health care professionals, friends and family opposing their decision. One doctor even refused to treat the couple, after consulting an ethics board. However, he described his pregnancy time as “incredible.”

“Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am.”

However controversial their situation has been, Beatie and Nancy now enjoy a beautiful and healthy baby girl delivered normally at a hospital in Bend, Oregon, although Beatie was initially scheduled for a C-section. The couple plan to raise their child like a normal family as Beatie previously explained. “ I’m so lucky to have a loving, supportive wife. I will be my daughter’s father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family.”

Beatie is not at his first attempt to become a parent. However, his first pregnancy was described as a “life-threatening event” having to go through an ectopic pregnancy with triplets, which needed surgical intervention. He lost all his embryos and his right fallopian tube in the intervention.

Now as their dream has come true, hopefully, they will have enough strength to fight any social inconvenient that might come their way.
