“What time is it?” has long been the question that raised
the preteens’ and teens’ exaltation. But when the time has come, the viewers
have raised Disney’s exaltation, with a record of 17.2 million viewers.
The Friday premiere of the made for TV movie, High School 2 made itself
remarkable, if not through the music and
dancing –though the kids certainly were mesmerized by these-, then surely by
the audience records it set. The reruns attracted millions of viewers
throughout the week-end and it was noted as the most popular show ever on basic
cable television and, not only that, but the highest rated Friday night show in
the last, lets say, five years.
Moreover, High School Musical 2 is recognized as the
most-watched TV telecast in an audience segment of age between 6-11 years with
the impressive figures of 6.1 million and also the second-highest rated in the
age segment between 11 – 14 years, after the 2004 Super Bowl (5.9 million). It
should be acknowledged however that the figures would have been even more
dazzling if views parties had been counted with the real number of attending
children and parents alike, as to The Hollywood Reporter highlighted.
Grown-ups were aligned with the teen exhilaration: "For
months we've been asking kids 'What time is it?' and it's exciting to finally
get the answer ... it's time for record-breaking ratings," externalized it
Anne Sweeney, co-chair of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney-ABC
Television Group.
Gary March, head of the Disney Channel prolonged the rating
victory to a even more profound level:
"Breaking the viewership record is terrific, but records come and
go, and what's really important is the impact the 'High School Musical' movies
have had on kids all over America and all over the world. These movies have
empowered kids to express themselves in whole new ways and have changed their
lives forever."
It appears that he was dragged by the success wave, as kids
didn’t recognize it as he put it: “That's hilarious. We just watched it because
everyone did - but change our lives? Whoever thinks that doesn't know
kids," stated with no childish words 10-year old Maya Goldberg, who
watched the movie with several friends.
It seems that the scene is set to welcome the next
year-planned sequel, a new High School Musical 3 to be released in cinemas,
this time. In the meantime, the ‘tweens’ will enjoy the live performances
promised by the movie stars all throughout the country.
