Hip hop star Kanye West is showing the world that a man’s
ego can be prevailed over – after swearing last year that he would never attend
another MTV awards ceremony again, this year he is set to close the MTV Video
Music Awards, live from Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood, Calif.
Kanye West was so furious last year over the treatment he
received at the 24th edition of the MTV Video Music Awards that he vowed never
to return again. He was appalled at not winning in any of the five categories
he had been nominated for and revolted with the way his performance was
prepared by the organizers.
Thundering that he was not receiving the respect he
deserved, he accused MTV of having “misled” him. He complained that he and
other artists played from private suites, instead of the main stage, and that
the show’s organizers “betrayed” him and “tried to make it seem like I was so
into everything that was going on in the show.” When in fact he wasn’t and he
would have much preferred the main stage.
To show that he was utterly serious about breaking up with
MTV, West also said at the time that he had already cancelled scheduled
appearances on TRL, in support of his then new album, “Graduation.”
A year has passed though and those wounds West suffered in Las
Vegas seem to have healed, as he is willing to make an
appearance at the video music awards show once more. This time around, he will
regale the audience and viewers with the closing performance of the 25th MTV
Video Music Awards.
While West’s contribution will mark the end of the festivities,
Britney Spears’ appearance will kick off the show. The music channel has
announced that the pop princess will be on hand to say “let the games begin”
but will not perform.
Spears was also famously present at last year’s event, when
her performance was the favorite gossip subject of many for weeks on end. West
defended Spears as well last September when he accused MTV of “betrayal.”
New years, new beginnings, new reconciliations.
