According to Palestinian medics, a 10-year-old boy and a
militant were killed by Israeli troops in a raid in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday.
The boy was killed during an operation carried out by the
Israeli troops near the southern Gaza
town of Khan Younis, a Hamas
official said.
According to an Israeli army spokeswoman, the operation was
carried out in the area by the Israeli troops, but the army didn’t know about
the child being hit.
BBC News says that Israeli troops opened fire only when a
group of Palestinians fired at them and that only gunmen were hit.
A Palestinian militant, linked with the Democratic Front for
the Liberation of Palestine, was killed when he was trying to place a bomb near
the border with Israel.
According to the army, the militant had fired from across the
border in Gaza.
The new clashes happened just as Palestinian and Israeli
leaders met in Jerusalem to make
progress in the peace agreement.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli
Prime Minister Ehud Barak were resuming peace talks almost three months after
they were launched at the U.S.
conference.
The boy, Tamer Abu Shaar, allegedly was shot in the head by
an Israeli bullet.
Almost 13 mortar rounds were fired at an Israeli patrol,
according to Hamas.
Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said to US-Jewish
leaders that more is needed to be done in order to speed up the process if a
treaty is to be reached this year.
Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni also said that time is
not on Israel’s
side.
Livni said: "Whoever thinks stopping negotiations will
stop terror is not in touch with reality," Reuters reports.
