Ofek 7 is Israel’s new spy satellite, successfully launched into orbit Sunday night.
Israeli media reports that Ofek 7 was launched from the Palmahim air force base. It will start sending high-quality images within a few days. Ofek 6’s launch failed three years ago and Israel subsequently had to rely on Ofek 5, a satellite orbiting for five years now.
The defense establishment was reportedly “very content” with the successful launch of Ofek 7. Among its tasks will be that to monitor developments in Iran, especially possible developments of nuclear weapons.
The satellite will be used exclusively for defense. Authorities said they expect it to remain in orbit for between four and six years, according to media reports.
Defense Minister Amir Peretz said the launch of Ofek 7 “adds an important layer to Israel's security and it is evidence of Israel's technological strength.”
The satellite weighs 66 pounds, is 7.5 feet long and will operate at least four years, according to Israel Radio’s reports.
