According to the Boy Genius Report website, Wal-Mart will
start selling a $99 iPhone at the end of this month. The device is said to have
only 4GB, but it will retain all the other iPhone features. Although the rumor
isn’t confirmed, the hype has already begun. The information about the 4GB
iPhone suggests that the $99 price will require a two-year contract. The
website does not confirm the $99 iPhone information.
The Boy Genius Report earlier revealed the distribution of
Apple’s device in Wal-Mart stores, information which was later confirmed by the
famous retail chain. Wal-Mart representatives stated that they will sell
iPhones on December 28 in
2500 of their 3500 stores across the United
States.
At the time the iPhone was released, a 4GB version was
available, although its production was ceased as Apple concentrated in
marketing the larger-memory models. Both analysts’ overview of the market and
people’s interest in the low-cost iPhone predict that, if released, the device
may help Apple to rapidly increase its smartphone marketshare. Along with that,
Apple has the advantage of big revenue with each iPhone sold. This makes it
easy for the company to cut the prices if needed, especially after the winter holidays,
as Charles Wolf, an analyst from Needham & Co., said.
The 4GB iPhone is feasible, considering the harsh
competition lying ahead. T-Mobile’s Android, the BlackBerry Storm, the
SonyEricsson Xperia X1 and the hyped Nokia N97 each want their own share -
that’s good news for the customers, as the price cuts are surely to follow.
