Wondering if Mariah Carrey is pregnant has become the new superficial obsession of those who like crossing the line that separates a public person’s private life from its public identity. Ellen DeGeneres has pushed the baby question so much on her talk show, that at one point it just seemed like cruel torture. The talk show host tried toasting for Carrey’s pregnancy, in this way trying to confirm the rumor.
The singer reacted by saying that champagne is just fattening and that she can’t drink before 3 P.M. After that, DeGeneres tried asking some more, bringing up the baby issue at the most unexpected moments. It was like she was trying to startle the singer into giving a positive response.
The question is not if Mariah Carrey is pregnant or not, but why are people so curious? Why is knowing such an intimate detail about a person’s life so valuable? Is it for ratings, large audiences or is it just the curse of being a celebrity in an obsession driven world? Why can’t a singer just be famous for the songs it produces, an actor for the talent and hard work deposited in giving life to different characters? It’s a well know fact that gossip and rumors are what drives some people’s lives, but when these become so popular they start affecting others also.
It has also been noted in the media that at the talk show Mariah Carrey didn’t sip from the glass of champagne, probably indicating that she is indeed pregnant. Maybe she just wasn’t in the mood for champagne, who knows?
