HTC’s phone running on Android and being sold through T-Mobile is out and now is the time to analyze if the new phone is the iPhone killer people expected. The most important thing to keep in mind is that G1 is not an iPhone; it runs on a different operating system, developed by Google, it has a slide-out Qwerty keyboard and esthetically it resembles a smartphone, rather than a trend setter phone.
Android seems fascinating and there are lots of things one can use the fresh operating system, from Internet to phone functionality. Basically, it all resumes to two major things: the hype the certain gadget managed to create and how many applications are available for it.
The G1 certainly had a better promoting campaign than other “iPhone killers”; it managed to sell millions in pre-orders and the fact that Google is involved has certainly drawn some attention. Even so, it seems that the G1 flame is starting to burn out slowly, while the iPhone frenzy continues.
Apple has always been good with the promotion of their devices, the company putting a lot of focus on the fact that it is very popular among technology enthusiasts and trend followers. G1 could have used some better promoting and Google had the resources to pull it off.
Finally, another major aspect is how a device uses and accesses its applications, which are very important these days. Apps can range from social networking services to satellite mapping of the world and iPhone currently has the upper hand on the growing Android apps market.
The iPhone apps are all to be found in one place, which means that people can easily find and download them, while the applications for Android are scattered around. On the other hand, the two phones don’t have so much in common and maybe they don’t even target the same people.
