Recently, scientist have theorized on what causes autism in children and have approached a theory claiming that one of the factors could be related to wet climates.
Scientists have analyzed cases of children who suffer from autism for Oregon, California and Washington and have compared the data with the precipitation reports in these states from 1987 to 1999. The results supported the theory that precipitation could be regarded as a factor in causing autism. Though the raw data supports the theory, scientists haven’t explained how can rainfall cause this disease.
They have stated that it may be because children might be spending more time indoors, in front of the TV than outside. Other possible explanation might be that not spending sufficient time outdoors, children might suffer from Vitamin D deficiency by not getting enough sun exposure. Also, scientists have added that rain might be carrying some chemicals from the upper atmospheres that can affect children directly.
On the other hand, other reports clearly go against this theory as the number of children suffering from some form of autism is increasing in all climates, wet or dry. Until now, nobody really knows what causes this disease which can take many forms. Cases of autism can cause children to have repetitive behaviors or severe mental retardation. In any case, there has been a long struggle to point out the exact causes of the disease.
Some scientists believe that autism can be blamed on genetic flaws, others claim that the disease can be triggering white the fetus is evolving the womb and other claim that autism is related to rainfall. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched a long-term study to find out exactly why does autism appear, in order for better treatments to be applied.
