Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Western nations are not making any steps towards ending the controversy surrounding Iran’s nuclear technology and continue to “complicate the issue.”
“They (the West) should stop playing games and acknowledge Iran's right to pursue nuclear technology. We in return are ready to reply to international concern and have a peaceful coexistence with the world,” the leader said Wednesday in a televised speech.
“The dispute should be settled within the IAEA as other channels would just further complicate the issue,” he added.
Ahmadinejad then referred to the deal made by his country with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), saying the first steps towards ending the dispute have been made, but urged other nations to refrain from interfering and politicizing the matter.
Despite welcoming the cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, Ahmadinejad reiterated that Iran will not stop its uranium enrichment process regardless of the sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council.
Also on Wednesday, Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani said the IAEA Additional Protocol could be revived in Iran’s case and unannounced inspections of its nuclear facilities could be resumed.
“The implementation of the Additional Protocol requires mutual understanding and goodwill. In that case we could once again accept its implementation,” Larijani said.
Two years ago, the Tehran government suspended the implementation of the IAEA Additional Protocol after the UN Security Council took over the nuclear dispute and began dictating sanctions against the Middle Eastern country.
Now, Iran is wiling to accept the Protocol if the IAEA receives the nuclear dossier from the Security Council. Many said this agreement between Iran and the agency is a stage preceding the implementation of the Additional Protocol.
Envoys from Tehran and the IAEA worked out a plan last month that would clear the mist covering Iran’s nuclear program. This agreement represents the framework for future talks aimed at resolving the political aspects of the long-lasting dispute.
Larijani is expected to hold talks with European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana on the sidelines of this issue. However, the Iranian negotiator said the IAEA-Iran cooperation is threatened by a third sanction imposed by the UN Security Council.
