Iran Will React if UN Passes New Sanctions

Iran said it would respond if the world powers continue add more sanctions against the Middle Eastern country for its controversial nuclear activities.

The message was passed by Iran’s Ministry of Defense spokesman Mohammed Ali Hosseini, who told reporters on Sunday that his country’s response will be determined by the content of the sanctions resolution.

The spokesman’s assertions are quite similar with those made by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday. During his speech addressing the nation, Ahmadinejad said Iran will take measures against any country that imposes new sanctions.

A meeting between top officials from the five permanent Security Council members - U.S., Britain, France, Russia and China – as well as Germany will reportedly take place Monday to discuss a possible sanctions resolution.

During his televised speech, Ahmadinejad also underlined the recent report by the International Atomic Energy Agency which says that Tehran made progress in providing details about its atomic activity. Nevertheless, the IAEA report also underlines the fact that Iran hasn’t provided enough data to prove its nuclear program has the singular purpose of reaching a nuclear based energy industry.

Iran also refused to stop its uranium enrichment process. Through this process Iran could obtain the material needed to build nuclear weapons.

The aggressive remarks made by Iran’s Defense Ministry came just a few days after France and Britain introduced a United Nations Security Council resolution suggesting a third round of sanctions against Iran. The U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice talked about the recently introduced resolution and added that it is very probable that the new round of sanctions will be passed.
