Iran issued a statement to the media with alarming news
about the installation of a new set of enrichment centrifuges. The new 6,000
which are to be installed will bring the grand total to over 9,000 centrifuges,
all on the site of its uranium enrichment plant in Natanz.
Even though President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad assured that the
nuclear technology is meant for electricity purposes, the U.N. Security
Council fears that the uranium enriching is done for building new nuclear
weapons.
The Council repeatedly asked Iran to stop all processes
involving the enrichment and has approved a third round of sanctions against
it.
The general opinion is that their past activities and
present announcement show that Iranians don’t seem to care about the U.N.
directives and actually conduct their activities with a rather bold attitude
defying the international demands.
Since the first discussions about the plants took place in
2006, the U.N. Council has inflicted three rounds of sanctions, the reason
being only the perpetual refusal to cease enrichment activities.
The problem regarding Iran is that even if they are truly
not interested in an atomic weapon, the fact is that at any point in time, if
considering it, they would have the means to produce it.
Later today, the president is expected to give a speech with
details on future plans and also the drive behind the new demanded centrifuges,
as Iran celebrates, through a massive ceremony in Tehran, the National Day of
Nuclear Technology. He was also quoted
by state television saying, "I promise to give more good news," but
without elaborating.
