Wildfires in central Florida
on Sunday caused the closing of interstate 95 and other major roads, as well as
the evacuation of hundreds coastal residents. About 400 homes in the
neighborhood near Daytona Beach
were ordered to be evacuated and 200 more homes were under a voluntary order.
According to The Associated Press, state Division of
Forestry spokesman Timber Weller said that a fire in Volusia County
has burned between 500 and 600 acres and caused road closures and home
evacuations. He also said that the dry weather conditions made fire crews’ struggle
more difficult.
“Control is extremely difficult, and there’re basically
several small subdivisions in the area and fires burning, in some cases, very
close to the homes,” Weller said.
The wildfires are also expected today as high winds, dry
conditions and record-high temperatures fuel the blazes in Volusia and Brevard
counties.
“The winds are playing havoc on our firefighters. We did
have some spotting over I-95. Just when we think we have a handle on it,
the winds shift,” said Orlando Dominguez, Jr., Chief of EMS/Brevard County Fire
Rescue, according to a local source.
The 40 mph wind speed maintained the fires that burned
nearly 3,000 acres in the two counties.
There were no reports of injuries or widespread damage, but
at least one home and one commercial building in Brevard County
were damaged.
The Palm Beach
officials are suspicious about several brush fires that started Sunday in the
city.
