Intel is said to be preparing to launch a new platform that according to DigiTimes’ sources, is called the Consumer Ultra-Low Voltage Platform (CULV), which would go head-to-head with AMD’s announced Yukon ultra-portable notebook platform.
AMD’s platform is based on the old M690 chipset, while Yukon based notebooks can be paired with Mobility Radeon HD 3450 discrete graphics, which makes 1080p Blu-ray playback possible thanks to ATI’s Avivo HD video processing, as well as HDMI output.
The systems that the CULV is aimed at are ultra-portable notebooks with sizes varying between 11.1 and 13.3 inches, whose prices range from $699 and $899.
DigiTimes’ sources have also revealed that HP would be switching from an Atom Zxx Menlow processor to CULV for a 13.3 inch mini-note system that is currently being developed and that is scheduled to hit the markets in June.
For 2009, Intel has allegedly planned to divide the notebook market into four segments: 12.1-inch and above traditional notebooks, Atom or Pineview-based netbooks, Menlow-based mobile Internet devices (MIDs) and ultra-portable notebooks with a display size between 11.1 to 13.3-inch.
According to sources at notebook manufacturers, HP, Dell and Acer are considering using the new CULV for products that are set to be introduced this year.
