Intel Targeting Media Phones With New Line Of Atom Chips

Intel rolled out at the beginning of this week a new line of Atom processors targeted at in-car devices and media phones. With the new processors, Intel promised advancements in integrated 2D and 3D graphics, video acceleration and support for multiple operating systems including several versions of Windows and Linux.

The Intel Atom Z5xx line are ideal for media phones, Intel said, offering communication services over IP and easy access to applications such as e-mail, text messaging, weather information, YouTube, horoscopes, and digital photo album.

And to support this even further, Intel also introduced the Intel Media Phone Reference Design, which the company said would facilitate development of hardware solutions to market.

“Meeting the needs of embedded environments and new market segments will play a large role in delivering the connectivity and functionality necessary as the number of devices connecting to the embedded Internet is expected to grow to an estimated 15 billion devices in 2015,” said Doug Davis, vice president Digital Enterprise Group and general manager Embedded and Communications Group, Intel.

The Intel Atom Z5xx processors, which are based on the 45nm Hi-k microarchitecture, come with several design options with 2.0 or 2.2 watts thermal design power, two package sizes, but also industrial and commercial temperature ranges. The 45nm technology reduces power consumption, in addition to offering superior speeds compared to the 65nm technology.

Intel also said that its new processors feature embedded lifecycle support, and remain compatible with previous 32-bit Intel architecture and complementary silicon. Furthermore, single-core processors are validated with the System Controller Hub US15W, with integrated graphics memory controller hub and I/O controller hub, all into one package.
