Taliban militants fired several rockets at a German and US military base in the northern Afghan province of Kunduz late Friday night, officials informed.
The insurgents said a fire erupted after the rockets struck the facility, but no casualties were reported by security forces.
According to a spokesman of the German Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in the province, three mortars landed near the base overnight, “but they did not cause any casualties or damage” to the facility.
Again the insurgents contradicted the reports, saying five mortars were fired at the German base and a training facility used by the US forces just before midnight.
A Taliban spokesman reiterated that the rockets caused a fierce fire, but couldn’t confirm the existence of any casualties.
The Provincial Reconstruction Team provides assistance to German troops in Kunduz and elaborates reconstruction projects. The facility is located near Kunduz airport, adjacent to a training camp used by US forces and Afghan policemen.
In other developments, the headquarters of the Zurmat district in Paktia province were targeted by a rocket and mortar attack, security officials said.
The provincial police chief said Taliban militants fired several rockets at the headquarters, but no casualties or serious damage were reported.
Insurgents claimed they have launched two dozens rockets and mortars the district headquarters, acknowledging they couldn’t confirm the existence of any casualties or damage.
Rebels continue to attack government buildings in the south-eastern province despite the offensive launched by coalition and Afghan forces. The authorities didn’t communicate further details, saying the remote area is hard to reach and it is not know what were the effects of the attack.
