A Jessup Correctional Institution inmate, who was taken to the Maryland hospital after he said he had some chest pains, managed to overpower the guards on Wednesday and then shot a man outside the building before taking his vehicle as a getaway car, the reports of Maryland state police said.
Actually, this is not the first time a prisoner escapes from Laurel Regional Hospital. Another similar case took place in November.
The state police record showed that the officers identified the prisoner as Kelvin Polk, who was serving life plus 40 years for charges of kidnapping and carjacking. After battling his guards, Polk seized their weapons and shot off his leg shackles, escaped the third security agent and fled outside where he shot the driver directly in the head, pushed him out of the vehicle, and drove away setting off a manhunt in Laurel, a suburb between Washington and Baltimore.
The man shot in the head is a surprisingly good condition. Luck and the fact that he was very close to a hospital may have been the decisive factors that saved the 51-year-old driver’s life. He was reportedly waiting to pick up a relative employed by the hospital.
Police found the stolen vehicle, a 1993 blue Toyota Camry, in Washington at about 1 p.m. and shifted the focus of the search there, the CNN wrote.
At about the same time the Toyota was found, a white Ford Explorer Sport Trac pickup truck, license number DC 3690, was carjacked nearby. Police officers investigating the case said they believe the carjacker may be Poke. No one was hurt or kidnapped in the second car jack.
"That search is continuing," Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said. "Helicopters, K-9 dogs and lots of police officers [are] in the area."
"We believe at this time, he's armed with one handgun," he added.
The 45-year-old carjacker may be shirtless and shoeless and was last seen wearing prison-issued, dark-colored jeans. Maryland State Police provided a phone number - 301-345-3101 - for tips about Poke.
