Directed by Iain Softley, “Inkheart” is a fantasy film based on the 2003 German novel of the same name written by Cornelia Funke. Due to the 2007-2008 strike of the Writers Guild in America, the movie was pushed from the March 19, 2008 release to December 12, 2008 in the UK and January 23, 2009 in the United States.
Cornelia Funke said that the first screening of the book took place in the summer of 2007, but even if it had gone well and she loved it, there are still some changes to be done especially at the end of the movie.
The production of “Inkheart” progressed very slowly, just like it happened with “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.” At first the movie was set to be released in the United States on the Christmas of 2007, but then further pushed to March 2008. It was shot at Shepperton Studios near London in 2006 and 2007.
“Inkheart” tells the story of Mortmier Folchart and the passion for books that he shares with his 12-year-old daughter, Meggie. When the two read aloud the books they love, the characters become real, but the awkward thing that takes place is that when a character comes out of the book, one from the real life gets trapped inside the pages.
Inkheart is one of the books Mortimer finds in a secondhand bookshop. But it somehow gives the man shivers when the characters inside it begin to speak. The book is filled with pictures of medieval castles and strange creatures and it is exactly the one he had been searching for Meggie since she was three years old.
According to the story of the movie, Mortimer had been searching for Inkheart when Resa, his wife and mother of Meggie, disappeared into the mystical world. And that’s when the entire adventure begins, when the evil villain of Inkheart kidnaps Meggie.
Watch the movie, read the book and spot out the differences because no matter how interesting it would sound, it still doesn’t cover everything.
