The extras injured last weekend during shooting for Tom Cruise’s new film “Valkyrie,” have hired a lawyer and are threatening to sue the film’s producers.
Attorney Ariane Bluttner has been hired by the group of extras injured last week in Berlin during filming around the Finance Ministry (formerly the Nazis' aviation ministry), when they fell off a truck.
At the time, the United Artists film studio stated that the eleven men were slightly injured and needed brief medical attention. The accident would not affect the film’s production schedule.
German authorities confirmed that the injuries suffered by the extras were minor and that an investigation would be started to ascertain whether there was a case of negligent bodily harm, as Berlin police spokesperson Martin Grosse said.
Bluttner told Agence France-Presse that her clients are considering suing the production company making the film, “unless it unbureaucratically and rapidly compensated the injured.”
“Those responsible on the set displayed inhuman indifference in playing with the health and the lives of the extras,” Bluttner told AFP.
Berlin police said in a statement that the accident occurred because of a bolt on a side panel of the truck coming loose. The truck was reportedly driving at a low speed.
“The injuries were extremely minor,” United Artists publicist Allan Mayer said in a statement for “Access Hollywood.” “Only nine extras were injured (not 11). The truck was going 15 miles per hour.
“The second unit was filming that day, and Tom Cruise was NOT working. Eight of the extras were treated for cuts and bruises and the ninth was kept overnight for observation.”
Filming for the World War II drama began in mid-July. Tom Cruise, wife Katie Holmes and daughter Suri have been staying in Berlin.
Cruise stars in “Valkyrie” as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, a German nobleman who opposed Hitler and plotted to eliminate him. His plan to assassinate Hitler failed and he was executed. He is considered one of the few heroes of the Nazi era.
There has been controversy surrounding the casting of Cruise as Stauffenberg, due to his well-known adherence to Scientology. The German government thinks little of Scientology and originally opposed Cruise’s project. Officials initially banned filming in historical locations in Berlin's government district.
“Valkyrie,” so titled after the codename given to the assassination plot, Operation Valkyrie, is slated for a 2008 release. It is directed by Bryan Singer and co-stars Kenneth Branagh and Bill Nighy.
