The U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is
publicly advising everyone not to eat any deli-prepared tuna salad
bought between July 26 and August 10 because they may be contaminated with
Listeria. The bacterium was found in 5000 pounds of tuna salad after routine
sampling. Any product dated after August 10 is safe to eat, according to The
Department of Public Health.
Listeria causes flu-like symptoms such as nausea, fever and
headache. It can be fatal to the old people, to newborns and to people with
weakened immune systems. It can also cause miscarriages.
The advice is referring to the products manufactured by Home
Made Brand Foods in Newburyport.
The two affected products are the 12 oz. prepackaged Stop & Shop Tuna Salad
with a sell-by date of Aug. 19, and Stop & Shop Tuna Salad from the service
deli with a sell-by date between July 28 and Aug. 19. The company said the tuna
salad was distributed to stores in Massachusetts,
Rhode Island, Connecticut,
Maine, New Hampshire
and New Jersey.
No cases of infections have been reported yet, company
officials said.
Due to fear of
contamination, Stop & Shop has announced a voluntary recall of its
tuna salad. All shops have removed all containers of the product. Buyers can
return the products and will receive a complete refund.
Home Made Brand Foods was purchased last May by the Irish
company Greencore for $44 million. It has about 200 employees. The company also
produces pizza, dips, sandwiches, pies or soups.
