The figures for the weekend earnings of ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ have come in and the movie has left its rivals far behind. During the Friday to Sunday period, the film has unearthed $101 million, which, added to the $25 million it made on its debut on Thursday, makes a total of $126 million.
‘The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,’ the number two movie on this weekend’s list, has cashed in only $23 million, less than a fourth of how much Indy got. Number three is ‘Iron Man’ with $20 million, while ‘Speed Racer’ continues to disappoint, making only $4 million and ranking in on fourth place.
The producers of the movie think it will reach the $150 milestone they have set for it, especially because Monday is Memorial Day and people are more likely to go to the cinema than on a working day. It is estimated that Monday’s earnings of the movie will amount to $25 million.
The owner of the five days debut box office record is another George Lucas Film, ‘Star Wars: Episode III – The Return of the Sith,’ which cashed in $173 million in 2005 during the Memorial Day weekend as well.
‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ debuted disappointingly on Thursday, when it made only $25 million, ranking fourth in Box Office Mojo’s stats. However, producers hoped that because the film was a family movie, the figures will rise during the weekend, but even then it seemed unlikely to beat Spiderman 3’s $150 million debut of last year.
