In order to give a helping hand to indie artists who wish to promote and sell their music, iLike has joined forces with TuneCore. And among other things this will help The Facebook Music service launched in late 2007 to be up and about again.
TuneCore already lets independent artists sell their music through iTunes, Amazon MP3, and Rhapsody, which has a deal with iLike
Indie artists who already upload their music into TuneCore for a small fee in order to sell it through iTunes and other online music stores can now participate in advertising revenue everywhere iLike's music catalog is embedded.
However since iLike and it goes without saying: Facebook, Bebo, Orkut, Hi5, Ticketmaster and the other social networks that have partnered with iLike ,has joined Last.fm in setting up royalty programs for non-major label entities, bands could have an incentive to send their users to their band pages on Facebook instead of their MySpace pages.
Moreover iLike CEO Ali Partovi says partnering with TuneCore wasn’t something that has to do with MySpace Music. "We've been fans of each others' companies for a long time, trying to work out a way to work with each other, and this was well under way before all of that (MySpace Music) surfaced. We generally have tried to focus on what we're doing ourselves, not to do things in response, “Patrovi said.
Most of plays will likely come from Facebook users who put songs on their profile pages and possibly in playlists. To join, indie artists and labels upload their music into iLike's database and select the option to distribute their music through Rhapsody or other stores. Once their music's on Rhapsody through iLike, royalties start to flow from whichever sites (Facebook, Bebo, Hi5, etc.) stream their music.
