Indiana Jones and the Cannes Attack

As Sunday approaches, so does the first screening of the much awaited ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.’ The movie will debut at the world’s most critically acclaimed festival and by doing so shows a great deal of bravery, since the jury at the Cannes Film Festival is known to be one that does not fall for just a catchy story.

The latest episode of the Indiana Jones saga comes after a 19-year-old break since its predecessor, ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,’ was released in 1989. The much-awaited project, which has been rumored to be on the way since the 90s, was kept secret by the producers. The filming for the movie produced by George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg was delayed until the perfect script was found. Huge names like Jeb Stuart, who wrote the ‘Die Hard’ scripts, or even Frank Darabont have supposedly sent Lucas drafts for the script. In the end, the producers decided to use David Koepp’s screenplay, the writer that worked with Spielberg for ‘Jurassic Park.’

All that is known about the story is that the action takes place in the 1950s, 20 years after the events in ‘The Last Crusade.’ This time Indy will fight Soviet agents instead of Nazis and the crystal skull is an alien relic.

It will be very interesting to see how Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford, is going to appear in this movie, since there are some years that have passed over both the character and the actor. It is very possible that Indy will be more the witty and ironic explorer and leave the fighting to his sidekick. And yes, Indiana Jones now has a sidekick: Mutt Williams, portrayed by Shia LaBeouf. Karen Allen will again play Marion Ravenwood, Indy’s girlfriend from ‘The Raiders of the Lost Ark,’ while Cate Blanchett will be a Soviet secret agent.

As the movie will face its first adventure along the way to becoming a hit like the rest of the series, Harrison Ford and the producers are confident that the movie will make a good impression at the French festival.

Even if the critics will not like it, the movie is bound to become a box office blockbuster, since it is hard to imagine anyone who won’t be interested to see what adventures the popular hero Indiana Jones will have to face in order to help keeping peace on the planet.
