Indiana Jones’ Debut Falls Short of Box-Office Expectations

The figures for the Thursday debut of ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ have been made public, and producers might not be very happy about them.

The first day of screening closed at $25 million, and puts the movie on the fourth place of Thursday debuts, after ‘Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith,’ ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and yet another George Lucas movie, ‘Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the clones.’

The movie that brings the more than 20 years old saga back to life was supposed to bring about 5 million moviegoers to cinema theatres in the first day of its release and to cash in about $50 million. But this was not the case.

However, producers hope they will be able to come close to the $150 million they thought their movie will obtain, even though they know this is rather unlikely. Their hopes lie in the fact that the movie is a family film, and as such, it should have a wider audience during the weekend.

George Lucas and his team is also counting on the fact that this Monday is Memorial Day, and people will have enough spare time to go see what good old Indy has gotten into this time.

Even if ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ will not do as good as it was supposed to, it is sure that the producers will make a lot of money with it anyway.

If we look at the statistics on Box Office Mojo we can already observe that Friday, the second day of the movie’s screening, the earnings have already increased with $6 million and Indiana Jones reached $56 million in the first two days of its release.
