June results with regard to gaming consoles brought exciting
news for Sony Corp., as the sale boost everyone was expecting "Metal Gear
Solid 4" to bring was finally confirmed. The game, which was launched in
June, totaled sales of no less than 775,000 units.
According to market tracker NPD Group, June was a good month
for Nintendo as well. The company managed to become the number one seller, as
its Wii console reached sales of over 11 million units in North
America in the 21 months that have passed since its release. Last
month, no less than 666,100 Wii units were sold. Obviously enough, Wii Fit
helped a lot; out of June’s total Wii units, 378,000 were the new Balance
Board-packing consoles.
Although the Xbox 360 was launched one year before the Wii
hit store shelves, the former’s evolution is currently lagging.
During the E3 Media and Business Summit in Los Angeles, Reggie Fils-Aime, president of
Nintendo America,
told reporters that the Wii would come in first, once the June sale numbers were
to be made public.
At the same event, Nintendo presented several of its
upcoming attractions. First and foremost, the company talked about MotionPlus, the
Wiimote pluggable peripheral that will give players the chance to experience
true one-to-one movement.
It then mentioned Wii Music; musician wannabes will
be able to test their musical skills on a wide series of instruments, including
guitars, violins and pianos. Out of the new titles Nintendo is preparing, a few
were brought up: Animal Crossing: City Folk, Shaun White's Snowboarding, Guitar
Hero On Tour: Decades and Grand
Theft Auto: Chinatown.
Winning first place
is never enough on its own; keeping that lead position becomes the real
challenge. Nintendo, with its constant concern regarding the improvement of its
products, seems to be well aware of this.
