Yeah, you’re reading right. After slashing the price of its
gaming console it seems like things are brightening up for Sony. At least in Japan, where
for the second week in a row, PS3 has outsold Wii.
According to the gaming site Famitsu and CVG in the week
ending November 18, PS3 sold 53,000 units, while Wii managed to sell only
36,000 units.
The good news follows last week’s announcement from Howard
Stringer, who revealed that the U.S. sales of PS3 had doubled since the new 40
GB version was launched.
At only 400 bucks, the 40GB PS3 is finally the first
configuration which is nearly as less costly as an Xbox 360.
But even if the sale figures in Japan are correct, it does
not mean that PS3 is resurrecting in Japan.
The Wii videogame console outsold Sony’s PlayStation 3 by
more than four to one in Japan in April-September, according to the Japanese
magazine publisher Enterbrain.
Nintendo sold about 1,6 million units of the Wii over 26
weeks through September 23 in its home market, compared with 385,492 units of
the PS3 sold.
And let’s not forget that on December 1, Nintendo will deliver Wii Fit in
Japan, along with a device called Wii Balance Board, a game that will surely
boost Nintendo sales.
But let’s get back to the current figures. Microsoft
continues to be unable to surpass its Japanese “complex” as Xbox 360 struggled
to pass the 5,000 mark.
On the handheld market, Nintendo DS is still the best
selling device with 81,000 units, while Sony sold 66,000 PSPs.
