He seemed to be immortal, as most of those who’ve been watching movies for the past decades were used to the sound of his voice and the corny, yet dramatic lines that he delivered, especially his trademark catch-phrase “In a World Where... .”
That same old voice we used to hear in the make-out sessions during the coming attractions, the one that we kind of took for granted, the deep voice that each and every one of us tried to make an impression of, at least once, that voice is forever gone and it seems like a whole new era has ended when Don LaFontaine died.
This man, whose face or name were basically unknown to the billions of people that knew his voice, started his career by accident, while he was a sound engineer, producer and writer at the National Recording Studios.
One day when the actor who was supposed to record a trailer that Don wrote for the western “Gun Fighters of Casa Grande” didn’t show up, LaFontaine read the spot himself and one thing led to another. Some forty years later he’s the number one voice of the voice-overs.
LaFontaine was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California on August 22nd due to complications from the treatment of an ongoing illness, and died on September 1st, said Vanessa Gilbert, his agent.
In a short interview posted on You Tube by grieving fans, LaFontaine talks about his favorite trailers and about other little things he used to like doing with his famous voice, like voicemail for the fans.
He reads: “In a time when Adam Slutzky is unavailable, one voicemail holds the key to your communication. Leave a message at the beep. I know where you live.” We also know where Don LaFontaine lives now- in the hearts of billions of people around the world who even for once heard his deep and dramatic voice in a dark room with red seats and popcorn on the floor.
