The Lyons
probably knew they would be blessed with triplets. What they had no idea of was
that they would be identical, an extremely rare situation happening in as few
as 1 in 100 million births.
Kevin, Declan and Cormac were delivered at NewYork-Presbyterian
Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center on Friday via C-section weighing 6
pounds; 5 pounds, 8 ounces, and 5 pounds, 2 ounces, respectively.
A team of about 15 doctors and nurses helped delivering the three bundles of
joy who were conceived the natural way and not by fertility treatment as
expected.
“Triplets don’t happen that often, but to have triplets that share a
placenta and are therefore identical is very rare, about one in a million,”
director of obstetrics Dr. Amos Grunebaum said.
Kerry Lyons and her husband Desmond were all smiling and happy during a
press conference held Tuesday when the babies were sent home. The happy couple
have two other kids, Liam, three, and Ciara, who just turned two.
Asked about how they will distinguish between the three of them, Kerry and
Desmond had some funny idea. Perhaps a different-colored nail polish on their
pinkies, Kerry said. Different tattoos on each, Desmond suggested. For now,
they'll wear ID bracelets.
“We just feel lucky and blessed that we have these three amazing little
babies, and they're healthy and, frankly, kinda cute, to boot, which we weren't
expecting, Kerry said.
Given the circumstances, what can they wish more? Maybe a bigger house? Or a
larger car? Who knows? Time will tell…
