Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, “I Love You Phillip Morris” is a movie based on the real story of a con man played by Jim Carey, who meets his soul-mate in prison. The action begins when the two begin to elaborate escapes and masquerades to be set free.
Carrey and McGregor make a nice couple as playing their love story with sweetness, passion and devotion. But in spite of all the hot scenes with kissing and everything between the two actors, Carrey's performance as a flimflammer is deliciously funny. His comedic versatility and impersonations are absolutely amazing, and he manages to become really powerful within his character’s experiences of the past. On the other hand, his co-star is sympathetic and vulnerable, almost as if he were constantly ready to be heartbroken. Both in jail and out, the two characters try to have a conventional romantic relationship.
Ewan McGregor said that most of the film was shot in real prisons and that the inmates in the picture were real prisoners.
The 47-year-old Carey may lose his audience because of a role in an independent film like this one. People are used to see him in mainstream comedies and seem to forget that he is a really great actor, very capable of doing serious and controversial roles too. He admitted that it wasn’t quite easy for him to play such a part, probably because it was his first. McGregor has played gay roles before and maybe that is why Carrey acknowledged a few initial fears.
So far, critics like what they see therefore early reviews are good for the movie. It even received four out of five stars from the Times of London.
Despite that, critics suggested the film could be hard to sell to broad audiences because of its gay storyline.
