IMDb, Amazon’s Subsidiary, Offers Free Streaming To Movies

The Internet Movie Data Base, more commonly known among Web surfers as IMDb.com, made a big step forward into establishing itself as the most comprehensive source of data on movie, TV, and celebrities.

IMDb.com, which is a subsidiary of Amazon.com, announced that it begun showing about 6,000 feature films and television shows on the Web site and all free of charge.

IMDb.com founder and manager Col Needham released a statement related to the move which he described as one that follows the mission of the Web site.

"We're excited to offer our users a simple online experience to watch full-length movies and TV episodes for free," he said.

"Our goal is to show our users every movie and TV show on the Internet for free on IMDb.com," Needham added.

However, there are several big steps to be made by IMDb.com in order to reach the goal declared by Needham, but that length translates into profits prospects for Amazon. On IMDb.com, on the pages where the content is not available, users will be able to rent or buy the video from Amazon.

IMDb.com also said it will allow film producers to upload their works to the site, provided the movie already has a page on the Web site and its running time does not exceed 45 minutes.

The massive streaming service launched by IMDb.com is ad-supported and users don’t have to worry about fees or subscription.

The Amazon subsidiary Web site is already offering free streaming to TV shows such as "24," "The Office," "The Simpsons," "Beverly Hills, 90210," "Charlie's Angels" and the list goes on.

Users will also be able to view classic movies such as "Fever Pitch" or "Some Like It Hot." More than 500 indie filmmakers have their movies uploaded on IMDb.com already and the Web site calls for more of them to join.
