Hurricane Omar Weakens

After becoming a category 3 hurricane, Omar didn’t hit any major land areas, last night the hurricane passing between the Virgin Islands and St. Maarten. Early reports say that no real damage was caused by the powerful hurricane, the Caribbean Islands suffering from knocked down trees and utility poles.

Though the hurricane didn’t hit with all of its power any land mass, except a small uninhabited island called Sombrero, ships that are in the area had to reroute in order to avoid the category 3 hurricane. Ships that had to reroute belong to companies such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Holland America and Disney Cruise Line.

Unfortunately, Omar sank four boats that were in the area, more specifically in Christiansted harbor in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Because of the hurricane Hovensa, a large refinery supplying gasoline and heating oil to U.S. East Coast markets, had to shut down momentarily and it will be restarted soon. Hurricane Omar is the 15th of this year’s season which proved to be pretty busy even for Atlantic standards. Hurricane season starts on July 1 and officially ends on November 30, but off-season storms have been seen before.

Hurricane Omar is reported to weaken as it enters the Atlantic Ocean and its status today at 8 AM ET situated the hurricane at about 160 miles north-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands and heading out into the Atlantic Ocean. Omar, a category 3 hurricane, is considered a pretty powerful storm and the fact that it didn’t cause any real damage is lucky to say the least.
