Starting today, Hulu content is no longer accessible through Boxee, the software package that can convert PCs, Apple TVs and other popular products into media centers.
Hulu has restricted fans from watching streaming shows from the site on television sets with Boxee. The move comes amid growing pressure from content providers on Hulu, a joint ventures between media giants NBC and News Corp.
Jason Kilar, the CEO of the popular American web TV portal announced via post on the Hulu blog that the content on Hulu is no longer available through Boxee, the freeware media center software for Mac and Linux platforms.
According to Kilar’s statement, Hulu’s content providers "requested that we turn off access to our content via the Boxee product." The executive expressed his frustration with the move that was surely out of his hands. Mr. Kilar said the decision “weighed heavily on the Hulu team, and we know it will weigh even more so on Boxee users."
However, there was a sign of optimists in the blog post. Kilar vowed Hulu it will continue to follow its mission of making media easier and more user-focused.
"We will not stop until we achieve it and we are sober in our assessment that we have such a long way to go," Kilar wrote.
