A re-make of the classic 1980 horror film “Friday the 13th” has topped the North American box office in its opening weekend. That was a record for the horror genre, topping the $39.1 million debut for 2004's "The Grudge."
“Friday the 13th” succeeded in beating out Valentine's Day favorites "Confessions of a Shopaholic" and "He's Just Not That Into You," as well as solid holdovers "Taken" and "Coraline."
"It's a great title, and it was a great weekend to open. We had Friday the 13th and Valentine's Day," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros. "I've seen it play a number of times, and the audience is with it the whole way. A lot of screams and a lot of laughs."
Second place went to hearty holdover "He's Just Not That Into You," which banked an expected $19.6 million on a 29 percent drop.
Kidnap thriller “Taken,” starring Liam Neeson, also fell one place to three in its third week, taking $19.3million for a total of $77.9 million to date.
Among the new film releases, Disney's new comedy 'Confessions of a Shopaholic' starring Isla Fisher in the role of a magazine retail writer with compulsive buying habits, came in at No. 4, while 'The International' featuring Clive Owen as an Interpol agent and Naomi Watts as a prosecutor, exposing a bank's global misdeeds, stood at No. 7.
"Coraline" rounded out the top five with $15.3 million, another teensy decline of just 9 percent from last weekend. "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" (Number 6) brought its five-week sum to $110.5 million, making it the first-ever non-sequel January release to hit the century mark.
The combination of solid debuts and strong holdovers lifted Hollywood to its best President's Day weekend ever. The three-day overall total of $190 million blew away the previous best of $157.1 million over President's Day weekend in 2007, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers.
