Some stars think they can do everything in showbiz – and don’t get me wrong, some perform flawlessly. Some singers act in one or two movies and the call it quits, other actresses launch album after album of meaningless, worthless music, because someone out there is buying it, as a sordid piece of memorabilia – some even taken on both the silver-screen and the theater stage.
The latest actress to transition from movie set to backstage is Katie Holmes, known to most as Joey Potter from Dawson’s Creek, but more recently famous for her wedding to Tom Cruise, the birth of their daughter – Suri and her induction into the Church of Scientology. Holmes played an interesting, deep and most at all realistic character as April in Pieces of April – but that was nothing compared to the burden of taking on Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, even though her role was secondary and had little stage-time.
Although the critics were harsh on both her and the director, it must be said that Katie Holmes’ performance exceeded the expectations of all the cynics. The actress had an even performance, which doesn’t mean it was flat or uninteresting. The role asked level-headedness, and Katie gave just that. Could it have been performed better? Of course – but that’s available for most parts.
Holmes seems to be following in Nicole Kidman’s footsteps, for the most part – marrying Tom Cruise for one, and having a not-so brilliant Broadway debut. Despite receiving mostly unflattering reviews from critics, Katie Holmes was very excited about her debut, not to mention Tom Cruise, who applauded frantically at the end of the play.
