Sunday night, at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Hollywood actors might be in for some surprises, given that the entire award season has been taken over by movies like “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Slumdog Millionaire,” while others have been completely snubbed even though the Golden Globes and the Oscars buzz had shrouded them from their debut.
Among the nominees for the awards are Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway and Robert Downey Jr.
The SAG Awards are usually considered pathways leading to the Academy Awards and they are given by the 120,000 actor members.
Although „Slumdog Millionaire,” the story of an orphan boy who manages to overcome his life’s hardships and comes very close to winning India’s version of the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” television game show, received ten Oscar nomination, the cast, mainly comprised of Indian actors, is quite unknown to American actors. Consequently, the SAG members might not add other honors to Danny Boyle’s production, not to mention that the latter only received two nominations, for best ensemble cast and best supporting actor for Dev Patel.
„Frost/Nixon," which recounts journalist David Frost's interviews with former United States President Richard Nixon, and "Milk” about murdered gay rights activist Harvey Milk, have also been nominated for best ensemble cast.
On the other hand, the movie “Doubt,” starring Meryl Streep, which got only five Academy Awards nods, has grabbed the same number of nominations for the SAG Awards.
Streep, who portrays a vengeful nun, along with fellow cast members Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis have all been nominated for the top acting honors.
Furthermore, „Benjamin Button,” which has earned thirteen Oscar nods, got only three SAG Awards nominations.
