Who could ever forget British singer George Michael’s
infamous 1998 arrest in a public toilet for lewd behavior? And who could not
remember it now that the artist has been arrested again?
The BBC is reporting that George Michael, 45, was arrested
Friday, Sept. 19, in
a London public toilet after being
found to be in possession of Class A and Class C drugs. He was taken to a
police station and was cautioned for possession of drugs.
Home Office Minister Tony McNulty told the BBC that he was
not aware of the details of Michael’s case but that drug laws need to be
“flexible.” He added that punishment for possession of drugs varied according
to the “circumstances and context.”
McNulty told the BBC, “The biggest message is that drugs are
wrong and people will be punished, but it must be right that there is flexibility
in the law.”
The drugs found in Michael’s possession have not been named
but crack cocaine is reported to have been among them, listed as a Class A drug
in the UK.
It was a decade ago that George Michael was arrested for the
first time in his life in a public toilet, in Beverly Hills, California, when
he was detained by an undercover cop for lewd behavior.
This was a life-changing event for the singer, who thus
revealed his homosexuality and even capitalized nicely on it. Remember the 1998
single “Outside,” which referred to this particular incident and had a very
cheeky video? It reached No. 2 in
the UK Singles Chart.
George Michael’s run-ins with the law include a 2006 arrest
on suspicion of drug possession after being found slumped in his car and two
other cautions that same year also in connection with drugs.
Last month, the two-time Grammy Award winner completed “25
Live,” his first world tour in 15 years and also the last arena tour of his
career. According to the BBC, the singer has said he desires a “quieter life.”
