Unlike other starlets of her generation, singer Hilary Duff said she never told any magazine she was still a virgin although the media reported her as being one.
The 21-year-old former child star was quoted by Elle magazine in 2006 as saying that she was a virgin and liked that about herself, especially since everyone she knew at the time had had sex and she was under a lot of pressure to fit in.
Her alleged statement seemed to jibe with her wholesome image at the time and given the purity trend, it wasn't out of the norm for older teens to declare they're still virgins. However, Duff is now claiming otherwise denying she ever told any magazine she was still a virgin, not that that's anyone's business.
The new issue of Maxim magazine, which features Hilary Duff on the cover under the "Hilary Duff, All Grown Up" tagline, contains an interview with the singer in which she explained the false report.
"You know what? I was quoted saying I was a virgin, but I absolutely did not say that," Duff said in the January issue of Maxim. "That’s nobody’s business but my own. Somehow it turned into a bad thing!"
However, Duff could've easily denied ever saying that the first time when the information was printed, but she probably preferred not to as she realized that people would interpret her denial as saying she wasn't in fact a virgin, so she may have felt that it was best to keep quiet about it. In the meantime, a rep for Elle told the Daily News, "We stand by our story -- 100 percent."
The virgin story is not the worst thing ever written about her, Duff said, recalling she was accused by the press of giving lap dances at clubs.
"People love to believe it —- it's way more exciting to talk about than the truth! And they're so descriptive about these lap dances," she told Maxim. "I don't even know how to do a lap dance!"
And yet, the singer, who is included in Maxim's list of the Sexiest Stars of 2009 alongside Scarlett Johansson, Hayden Panettiere, Blake Lively, Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Vanessa Hudgens, said she is not afraid to show her sexual side now and then, like she did in her music video of single "Reach Out" off her greatest hits album "Best of Hilary Duff."
"I was ready to do something different. The intent was not to be overtly sexual; I'm not naked. I do have little shorts on in it," she said.
Currently dating New York Islands hockey player Mike Comrie, Duff denied the two are engaged explaining in Maxim that she enjoys wearing rings. She was seen sporting a ring on her left hand but she no longer wears it.
This is not the first time Duff complained about the attention surrounding her private life, but she hopes people will focus more on her work, which she wants to keep separate from her personal affairs.
