Traffic started running again Wednesday morning on three northbound lanes of the busy Highway 101 that has been closed Tuesday afternoon between Woodside and Redwood City because of a big rig fuel spill.
The highway was closed around 2 p.m. Tuesday after a tanker trailer partially overturned, spilling an estimated 2,000 gallons of gasoline across the northbound lanes. The California Highway Patrol CHP closed the southbound lanes at Highway 92 and northbound lanes at Highway 84 for hours.
“What happened was the fuel pooled into the two center lanes and it degraded the asphalt so severely it is not safe for anyone to travel on. Additionally, there is so much fuel that it was unsafe to grind it...It will impact the afternoon commute," said California Highway Patrol Capt. Bridgett Lott said according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Aside from pollution concerns, the fuel seeped into the drain pipes under the highway and officials were worried about the possibility of a fire or explosion, said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Paul McCarthy.
"They don't want the freeway to blow up under cars driving by," he said.
Two lanes of the highway, which are still closed, are expected to remain that way through the morning. No injuries were reported after the incident, according to California Highway Patrol.
